Africa is a massive continent with a population of over 1.2 billion, making it the second most populous continent in the world. The continent is also one of the most diverse, with some of the most stunning natural and ecological attractions in the world, coupled with exciting cultures, pristine beaches and delectable cuisines, which all combine to make Africa one of the most alluring destinations in the world. The African continent is so huge that one needs to take many trips here to truly appreciate the diversity that is on offer, we will however highlight some of the best countries and attractions to start with when visiting Africa and provide some tips on getting there and the best time to visit this wondrous continent.

Getting to Africa

If you are flying to Africa from the United States, the best flights are available from east coast airports such as New York (JFK), Washington DC (IAD) and Atlanta (ATL). Airlines such as Delta, United and African Airlines such as South African Air or Egypt Air, depending on where you are flying to. We recommend flying into South Africa if your intention is to explore other African countries, since it is relatively easy to find flights to all over Africa from South Africa. One of the things that you should also do is book a couple months in advance and ensure that you constantly check your itinerary to ensure that you capture any schedule changes that might arise.

Where to go in Africa

If you are planning a trip to Africa, there are some destinations and attractions that should be at the top of your list in order to have the best possible experience. Some of these destinations include; South Africa, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe/Zambia and Safaris in Tanzania and Botswana.

South Africa

South Africa is one of the most beautiful African countries and offers some world class attractions for all to enjoy. Located on the Southern tip of Africa, the capital city Cape Town serves as the gateway to several other African destinations due to the fact that one can get a flight from Cape Town to virtually anywhere in Africa. The city is located on a peninsula, immediately beneath the breath taking Table Mountain and one of main attractions in the city is to take a cable car to the top of the mountain for panoramic views of the alluring city. Table Mountain also offer hiking and climbing opportunities for the avid explorer who wants to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Other attractions in the city of Cape Town includes the notorious Robbin Island – formerly home to a prison that the famous South African leader Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Robbin Island is now a UNESCO National Heritage Site and is worth a visit to learn more about South Africa’s interesting history. 

Cape Town is also home to pristine beaches such as Boulder’s Beach which has its own colony of Penguins! And the scenic Cape of Good Hope which is a favorite lookout spot for visitors.
Destination South Africa is also home to the Kruger National Park, which is one of the few National Parks where you can find all five of the African big game species (Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhinoceros). This park is the place to visit if you are enamoured by wildlife and wants the opportunity to get close to them in their natural habitat. Museums that you must visit in South Africa includes the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, these are two of most renowned in the country and they chronicle the history of Apartheid and the struggles involved.

Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe/Zambia

Victoria Falls is probably the most famous waterfall in the world, located on the Zimbabwe/Zambia border in Africa, the fall welcomes millions of visitors annually. This alluring fall is located within the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and has a width of over 1600 metres and a height of over a 100 metres. Victoria Falls is the largest curtain of falling water anywhere in the world, with over 500 million cubic metres of water towering down the falls per minute during rainy season. This Falls is one of the most wondrous and awe-inspiring attractions in the world and you will be left amazed by the power of nature when you take a trip here.

Safaris in Tanzania and Botswana

Safaris are a major aspect of what Africa offers a travel destination and two countries that are blessed with some of the best safaris in the world are Tanzania and Botswana. In Tanzania, the sprawling Serengiti and Ngorongoro Safaris are two of the most diverse in Africa, you will easily spot prominent animal species such as lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalos, cheetahs and leopards. If you visit the Serengiti Safari in January – February or June- July, you will experience the magical annual wild beast migration, which is something not to be missed! Another of the African Safaris that has gained acclaim worldwide is the Chobe National Park in Botswana. This park is home to huge herds of elephants and is also home to the Cape Buffalo, you will see these large animals converged around the Chobe river, especially during the dry season. The Chobe National Park is also home to several bird species and migrating zebras during the months of July – September.

When to Visit Africa

The best time to visit Africa is the dry season which stretches from May to October. This is when most animal species converge around waterholes giving you the perfect opportunity to see the best of African wild life. You however can visit year-round since temperatures are warm throughout the year, if you want to avoid the crowds, you can visit December to April, you will still see wildlife, but probably not as much as in the dry season. You will also be able to enjoy the many alluring sites in cities such as Cape Town and Johannesburg throughout the year!
